There are some definite advantages to wearing a petticoat. A petticoat pushes your dress up and out. Therefore it can give you more freedom of movement. Should your dress be slightly too long, having a single hoop can raise your dress 1/4 of an inch, wearing a double hoop can raise it up to 1 inch, which can save on alterations to the dress. If your dress has a train a train petticoat will keep it in place.
